AWTY 32 - Ruth Bader Cellsburg (Cells at Work!)

Transcript
Hello and welcome to our week. There yet and exploration and education and anime. I'm your anime idiot, patrick dugan.
Speaker B:I'm your I wanted to make a pun on anatomy and anime, but it didn't come quick enough. I'm your anime expert, dana hollander.
Speaker C:Anatomy.
Speaker B:Anatomy.
Speaker C:And I'm brenda mccullough, your anime. Frank Detorei, the gross, sad man, full of cartoons. And David hyde pierce.
Speaker B:Cool.
Speaker C:It was Bill Mary's character in osmosis Jones. Yeah. Okay. I had to look it up too.
Speaker A:With that great reference.
Speaker C:Very timely.
Speaker A:Everyone's fresh on that osmosis June game.
Speaker B:Wait, I got it, I got it. Anime atomy.
Speaker C:There we go.
Speaker B:Yay. I got there.
Speaker A:Should we burn this down? Start again? No, I think.
Speaker B:This is fine.
Speaker A:If this is your first episode key, let's make it.
Speaker C:Please.
Speaker B:It gets better from here.
Speaker C:Well, we can't promise that there's better episodes later or earlier.
Speaker A:Brendan lied to them, so yeah. We're here to watch some osmosis Jones anime action in cells at work.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Does your osmosis Jones not have enough body pillows? Let's make it an anime.
Speaker A:I don't know what you're talking about. I have that sweet, sweet osmosis Jones body pillow.
Speaker C:What was his name? driz. drez.
Speaker B:Terrible.
Speaker C:Trying to think of like, the pills name.
Speaker B:I think I remember it.
Speaker C:That might have been the villains. I don't know. We can move on.
Speaker A:What was the main character's name? It's fucking osmosis Jones.
Speaker C:It's the title anyway. Why are we talking about osmosis Jones so much? You might ask.
Speaker A:Because this is an anime about cells in a human body fighting mouth, disease and infection.
Speaker C:They're working hard.
Speaker A:It seems like a lot of fun.
Speaker B:Yeah, I'm very excited. I love anatomy. I love human anatomy. So if this show teaches me anything about human anatomy, I'm down for it.
Speaker C:Teaches is a strong word. I think it'll reference I don't trust, I guess, the accuracy of an anime cartoon. I actually teach biology.
Speaker A:This show came out last summer and was the talk of the Internet. Have either of you experienced this show at all?
Speaker B:No. I've seen a lot of ads for it when I watch stuff on the internet. But other than that, I haven't watched it. crunchyroll. verve, mostly. wink.
Speaker C:Hashtag sponsored someday.
Speaker B:Hashtag not sponsored.
Speaker C:Hashtag one day. No. I don't know shit about this besides the obvious cells at work. So it's all I got.
Speaker A:Cool. So we're all going in fairly blind. After our recent streak of fucking bummers, I want something much more positive. So, yeah, we're going with the fun body anime. Well, we're going in blind. There are bad body anime and you know what I mean. Hey, Cage.
Speaker C:It was a fun body. No. Hey, no, it wasn't fun for me going in blind. We don't know if this is a fun one. In my view, my pool of playlist magic, I just fuck us up in, like, episode three.
Speaker A:Fingers crossed. So shall we dive on in.
Speaker C:Let's get a look in the body. My body is ready. My body is a wonderland.
Speaker B:Body.
Speaker A:Stop. Hill sue.
Speaker B:Did anime.
Speaker A:Teach me something ae I didn't learn.
Speaker B:It was a delight.
Speaker C:It was very delightful. But if any of the educational stuff reminded me of my hero, academia was just like, oh, here's a new character. And then just three fourths of the screen is covered in text. And it's just like, wow. So it's just like a lot of information all at once with any of the actual informative stuff.
Speaker B:I figure out that you have to pay attention to what the narrator is saying because she's just reading whatever's on the screen.
Speaker C:Yeah, that was easier. I wish I knew that in episode one, not three.
Speaker A:So, yeah, we'll get into it. But it's a delight.
Speaker B:It is.
Speaker A:So we have episode one. We're introduced to the city of the body of just some person's body that we don't know. And we see the inner workings of this very hectic, very busy city. And we're introduced to one of our main characters, the red blood Cell, who is a delivery girl delivering co2 to wherever, whatever organ needs it.
Speaker C:I think she's delivering oxygen and as delivering co2 later.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker C:Because bodies don't run on co2. That's what we expel. True get learned.
Speaker A:Yeah. At some point, she's running around with co2. Anyway, she delivers stuff.
Speaker B:Red blood cells deliver things around the body.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:So we see her running along a city street when a big explosion happens and a virus breaks into the city. It's going to wreak havoc.
Speaker C:I'm going to wreck it.
Speaker A:I love that we get the white blood cells, this elite, like police force that stop all the invaders. They come up and save the day and kill all these viruses. And everyone is just gushing because they're so rare, they're so good. They're so proud at what they do.
Speaker C:And all the germs are wrong. All the germs are gushing because they were cut open. Because they fucking do not hold back at all. Yes.
Speaker A:This, for as adorable as it is, is a very bloody anime. And I don't mean that because we are literally inside blood.
Speaker C:But that immediately made me wonder. I'm like, why do the germs have blood? Do they have blood cells in them? Is it like Inception, where we just go further and further into the bodies of the cells?
Speaker A:I don't want to think in that.
Speaker C:Series everything just has a purple tint.
Speaker B:I will say it was at this point that I decided I was going to call the main red blood cell girl Red, and the main white blood cell boy Phil, because they're neutrophils. So I thought it would be good to give him his own name.
Speaker C:That's good because I just called him White. And when there was more of them, I'm like, the whites were running. Oh, that feels weird.
Speaker A:White was just abbreviating to rbc and wbc. I did that in my head. I've just been calling the main red blood cell Ruth bader Sellsberg.
Speaker C:Ruth. Yeah, let's call Ruth. Is this the first reasonable nickname we've given a character?
Speaker B:Ruth and Phil.
Speaker C:And Phil. Ruth and Phil. I love it.
Speaker A:I don't think reasonable is the word.
Speaker C:I would use, but it's not knuckles.
Speaker A:Yeah, it fits. So, yeah. The Supreme Court justice is so thankful to this white blood cell, Phil, who saves the day. And we see that not all of the viruses were killed. One survived, and it's lurking and trying to get its revenge. I believe at this point we get our opening, or was that right at the top?
Speaker C:It was right at the top.
Speaker A:Okay. We skipped over it, but since we're transitioning scenes, it is delightful. It is so cute.
Speaker B:I love it.
Speaker C:Very poppy music. And we kind of get a quick overview of just, like, all the characters, presumably we'll see and get introduced to later and just kind of what they're doing in their day to day lives. It's very nice.
Speaker A:And it also has one of my favorite things in anime openings, which is Japanese people singing English lyrics phonetically. So technically the words are right, but you can tell they aren't quite sure what they're saying. So we see. Ruth is off on deliveries to the lungs but is desperately, hopelessly lost.
Speaker B:Someone tells her.
Speaker A:She checks into the spleen, she checks into the lymph duct and eventually goes to, basically, storage facility and is so lost, this hallway is abandoned. And she happens to check into a storage room to see if anyone can help guide her. And this is where the germ is hiding out and it's trying to look over the maps to get where it's going.
Speaker C:He's also west.
Speaker A:Yes. Because bodies are confusing.
Speaker B:That's what I was thinking. I was like, if she's brand new, why didn't anybody help her? They can't just be like, yeah, go deliver this to the lungs.
Speaker C:Good luck.
Speaker A:What are those? So we get the germ attacks, but Phil climbs out of a vent and is ready to fucking solid snakes his way out.
Speaker C:Yeah, I like the the brute, like, opens up the door and it's like, oh, there's that germ that attacked me. Well, and then just shuts the door. And then he kicks open the door. Like, don't act like you didn't see anything. You could have been cool, man. You could have just let her go. It would have been fine.
Speaker A:Yeah, you actually made the ruckus that got you killed. You should have just kept on hanging out in there. But they fight. They go at it. But the Phil and Ruth are captured in a bacterium capsule, and it's a smokescreen. And the germ runs away. And we're introduced this germ is let me get my medical hat on. pneumococcal bacteria that causes pneumonia and a string of other illnesses.
Speaker C:Caucus.
Speaker A:Don'T mind to be more political speak, though.
Speaker B:Isn't that a thing? A caucus?
Speaker A:True.
Speaker C:We're talking about anything I know about politics.
Speaker B:I'm so sorry.
Speaker A:I know student councils run everything, and that's the highest governing body I acknowledge at this point.
Speaker B:I was like, yes, Phil, teach me about diseases. I love it.
Speaker A:I'm here to learn.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:So, yeah, he's in hot pursuit trying to find this germ because he has a little receptor on his hat that will show him when a germ is around. And since the pneumococcus is likely going to the lungs, because that's where pneumonia sets in and Ruth is looking for the lungs, they go together because they're also still sort of entangled in this net that they were caught in. So they head over to the lungs. His receptor is still going off for some reason. And we get introduced to the platelets, which are cute little kids.
Speaker B:They're little baths.
Speaker C:They're children. My favorite part is they're doing heavy construction labor.
Speaker A:Yeah, they're the construction cells. They're fixing all the things. In this specific case, the delivery person dropped off boxes that were too big for them and they couldn't open them because they're just little babies.
Speaker B:They couldn't reach the packages.
Speaker A:They had to get a ladder to get to the top of this box. It was so cute.
Speaker B:So cute.
Speaker C:They remind me of the little construction hack, like enemies from Mega Man who are just like the little hats. And then they pop up and shoot at you and then squat back down because they're little tiny construction workers.
Speaker A:But they're not here to fight. They're here to build things.
Speaker B:They do a good job.
Speaker A:They pause and are like, oh, let's help these poor children.
Speaker C:Tiny, tiny children.
Speaker A:So they open up their packages for them and go on their way. So, yeah, Phil is still confused because his receptor is still going off, but there's no German site, so he thinks it's malfunctioning. And we also see as they approach the lungs as the germ is still on the loose in like, a newsroom, the main command center, there's a broadcast, there's a message that goes out that the helper T cell is releasing the killer T cells, which are the elite germ fighting cells.
Speaker C:Bros, the murder cells.
Speaker A:They are all bros. They all have hats that say kill on them.
Speaker B:It's going to be real. I want one.
Speaker C:Yeah, I kind of want one of those hats.
Speaker A:I want the hat. We see later on. We'll get there. So, yeah, they meet up and one of the lead killer T cells looks at Ruth going to the lungs and is like, hey, kid, you know that thing is hunting you specifically because it will eat you for food, right? So you're a target. Get out of here. And she freaks out because she's a nervous wreck, I think.
Speaker C:She turns to Phil and it's like, why don't you tell me any of that stuff? He's like, it probably wouldn't have helped you.
Speaker A:It's like, what, you're a mess as it is. I'm not going to make you more nervous.
Speaker C:Pretty much.
Speaker A:But yeah. He's like, I'll ignore them. They're just teasing you, you're going to be fine. And then they probably we'll see. We get to the lungs and this.
Speaker C:Is where they split up, right? Because they were both going to the lungs, but different sections in the lungs.
Speaker A:Yeah. So Ruth is going off to make deliveries and Phil is still off hunting. So she walks away again, thanking him profusely for all of his things.
Speaker B:Can I just say real quick, they went to a place, and I'm not exactly sure what part of the body it was, but it had a lot of trees in it. And I thought it was the lungs. And I thought that was really cool and creative that the lungs had, like, trees in it because trees make oxygen. But it wasn't the lungs. And I was disappointed. I thought that would have been a cool thing.
Speaker A:Yeah, I thought the same thing. I was like, wow, that's great. And then they kept going, and then they went to this big air vent factory. I'm like, okay, this isn't as cool, but I'll take it, I guess. But yeah. We cut to the commercial break, right, as Phil notices something on the sensor as she's walking away from scratch.
Speaker C:That's me. White blood cell.
Speaker B:You're probably wondering how I got in this situation.
Speaker A:Well, you just watch me walk all the way here, so you should know.
Speaker B:Fuck you.
Speaker C:Pay attention.
Speaker A:So, yeah, we go back to Ruth, who is still lost, cannot find the room that she's supposed to go to. And she runs into her senpai, an older, more experienced red blood cell. And she asks for tips. And literally she looks at her map and she's like, oh yeah, you see the numbers on the doors? Go to the one that is on your map. Yeah, that's finding an address. Did Ruth not know that? Did she not know that's how deliveries work?
Speaker C:I was wondering about that too. It seems pretty obvious.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:I also made a note that the semi touches her shoulder because they kind of lingered on that for a second. And I was like, oh, it's going to pay off. It doesn't, but at least maybe not what we watched.
Speaker A:I assume it's because I'm biased, but I was getting strong gay vibes from them.
Speaker C:Anything feel like you might be a tad biased? I don't know if that.
Speaker B:I feel like you might be a tad by.
Speaker A:You got me there.
Speaker C:I could hear dana dabbing through the.
Speaker B:I wasn't, but I was flailing my arms around.
Speaker C:I was thinking it was a moment like the senpai was like, I'm actually the virus in disguise. And she was going, that's what I thought it was. But I watched a lot of drama.
Speaker A:We're not getting that deep. We are talking about blood cells, surface level. So she finds the room that she needs to go to, brings the box in, and oh, no. The germ was hiding in the box all along. No, that's why the sensor was all messed up. She brought him right to the place he needed to go. So she is in this tiny room with this monster trying to eat her, and she sees other red blood cells coming in, and she locks them out so they'll be saved.
Speaker C:I like how the germ says, like, I'm going to kill the red blood cells and take the nutrients they're carrying. And Red is like, I got to get out here, and opens the door, and she just sees two people with giant arms full of groceries, like, oh, boy, I sure do have a lot of nutrients.
Speaker A:I'm particularly robable right now, real on.
Speaker C:The nose, but it's done comedically, so it was funny.
Speaker A:So, yeah. We then see Phil busted from another vent that's his thing just popping out of small spaces because he can migrate.
Speaker C:Through the cell walls with the ways that blood cells can use migration to get through them. So it's an actual skill. We see it a lot later on, too.
Speaker B:So you can't say that this show didn't actually teach you anything.
Speaker C:I just don't know already.
Speaker A:I learned what cells do. I learned I have cute anime girls in my body right now that are in my blood. All I got babies in my mouth. Get them out.
Speaker B:Doctor, can you please tell me the anime girl count in my blood today?
Speaker A:So, yeah, the Phil pops out and starts wailing on this pool, but the capsule, bacterium capsule that the germ was using is too strong, and he can't beat it. So the germ gets Fill and Ruth cornered, and they back up. And as the germ is about to strike, it crosses a threshold where it is detected by the bronchial tubes and is like, this is not supposed to be here. Let me just bubble you real quick. And captures the germ and sends it off to be sneezed out.
Speaker B:I loved that. I was really hoping that the episode would end with just a human person. Just like, doing a small sneeze chew. Just like a chew.
Speaker A:I kind of love that we never see the actual person.
Speaker C:Yeah, I was thinking about that going into this. We were joking about osmosis Jones, and I think that's, like, the biggest difference is it doesn't matter who this person is. It's just a body.
Speaker B:Yeah, I like it too. I just thought it would have been funny.
Speaker A:Yeah. Just all this extra drama just for a tiny little the missiles.
Speaker B:But after they didn't, I was like, oh, okay. That's neat. This is just where they live. This isn't a human person.
Speaker A:This is their city.
Speaker C:I like the one. They also bubble the germ. Fill and Ruth like, just go over and get some tea and sit down and watch it going, all the conveyor belt and then getting loaded into the missile. And she's like, Watch this part. And he just explodes and just like, all right, back to work. Just like a little break.
Speaker A:So, yeah, again, Ruth is thanking Phil Profusely, and she's like, Will I ever see you again? And bluntly, he's like, probably not. There's, like, trillions of us.
Speaker C:There's a lot of people here. It's a big body.
Speaker A:There's a bunch of white blood cells. There's even more red blood cells. So I don't know if I'd recognize you the next time I saw you.
Speaker C:I do like, though, I thought in I thought going into this, that since they're all sales, they all would look the same. They would all be the same character sheet. And I'm very happy to see that they are different.
Speaker A:Yeah, me, too, because that would be very confusing very quickly.
Speaker B:Yeah, they did all look the same. And then it turned out that each episode was about different red blood cells.
Speaker C:That fucked with me.
Speaker A:But, yeah, they are all wearing the same uniforms, so that works. But it is nice to see, like, their faces and body shapes are different.
Speaker B:I love her jorts.
Speaker A:Yes. All the red blood cells have jeans or jorts. And it is very good.
Speaker B:Love it. What an easy cosplay.
Speaker A:The jorts run through my veins.
Speaker C:You have a red hat and a red jacket. You're already there. You're a red bless on that.
Speaker B:I have a red jacket.
Speaker A:I'm getting there. All right. Yeah. And they part ways. And that's episode one. Yeah.
Speaker B:And the ending song is just as delightful as the opening.
Speaker A:It's Ruth pushing a little platelet on a pallet, just walking. And it's very cute.
Speaker B:Yeah, the song is very good. All right, episode two. What wacky adventures will we get into this time?
Speaker C:I already forget.
Speaker B:I'll tell you. Ruth is delivering nutrients, and she's lost again because she's really bad at this, I guess. And she runs into her senpai, and she's like, oh, I'm going that way, too. I'll go with you. And then they run into more platelets, and the platelets approach a staircase. They're afraid to go down the stair.
Speaker A:This was such a great sequence because it's built up to be so dramatic. And it's just can these small children carry a box down four steps?
Speaker C:It's not even a lot.
Speaker B:And they did it. I'm so proud.
Speaker A:It was just such a nice little moment of let's just pause. I know you saw a bunch of blood and gore last episode. Let's just watch these kids try to walk down some stairs carrying a big box. And they do, and they succeed, and no one falls or gets sad. It's great.
Speaker B:And then they're, like, adjusting each other's hats and stuff. It was so cute. Did a great job.
Speaker C:I like how much the blood cells find the platelets adorable. Like, even Ruth and her sandbags stop and are just like, they're so cute.
Speaker B:Yeah. Even Phil in the first one, he's.
Speaker C:Like, yeah, he's like, blushing a little.
Speaker B:Yeah. So yay, it happened. And Ruth remarks how peaceful it is in the blood cells, in the blood vessels. And I was like, oh, foreshadow.
Speaker A:I had to say it out last.
Speaker B:Had to sinks it. And then the platelets are shown taking some Febrine to a river. I don't know where that river would lead. A little disconcerting. But they're washing the Febrine in the river. I'm probably pronouncing it wrong. Fibrin. Fibrin sounds better.
Speaker A:Yeah, let's go with that.
Speaker B:Fibers fibrin. And Ruth is heading to work, and the sempai, as they're walking together, is like, okay, now pay attention to where we're going so you can learn the routes and this doesn't have to happen again.
Speaker C:I can't be with you all the time.
Speaker B:Yeah. And then they're up on a very high walkway, and the senpai explains that they're really near the skin, so they have to be careful because the skin is I forget what she says exactly, but it's, like, super susceptible to external stimuli. So there's like a big shake, and she's like, oh, that was normal. I guess. She seemed to think that a big shake was kind of normal. But then, kaboom, there's a big, huge explosion. Luckily, no one seems to get hurt in the explosion that we see, but then there's just that we see, but then there's just a big gaping hole in the middle of the skin. yikes.
Speaker A:A big sink hole in the middle of the city.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Oh, no. This giant hole just starts sucking red blood cells in because it's no, thank you. Yeah, it's a scrape. So what happens when there's a scrape on the outside? It bleeds, so the wristblow itself are getting sucked down into it. But luckily Phil is there, and he grabs Ruth and pulls her in. And he's like, oh, I know you. And I'm like, yeah, you guys are in the opening together.
Speaker A:Yeah, it's weird. It's like you're the main characters or something, right?
Speaker B:Weird. So he pulls her in to when there's the explosion. This also from a distance, the hallways inside of the hall that get torn into it gives me tripophobia so bad. It trips tripophobia so bad.
Speaker C:All the little rooms all right by each other.
Speaker B:Yeah. I hated it. Like, when they were shown from a distance, I was like, yeah, terrible. But so they're just kind of hanging out in one of those hallways, and Phil is like, we'll just kind of have to wait until the hole is repaired. It'll be repaired soon, probably, but then oh, no. Germs are trying to get in through the scrape.
Speaker A:Oh, shit.
Speaker B:And as the narrator was explaining what each of the germs did and that some of them kind of live on the surface of your body, I was like, how am I not dead? It's so scary.
Speaker C:That's why we got fills in our body to protect us.
Speaker B:All my little fills. I love you.
Speaker A:You got to fill yourself up with my blood cells. I like how it hurts me as much as it hurts everyone else, whereas.
Speaker C:I get a delightful sadistic pleasure out of it doing to others.
Speaker B:But so, yeah, there's a bunch of different types of germs trying to get in. One of them has a weird shark with no eyes for a tail. It's really strange.
Speaker C:Yeah, these were very interesting. They weren't just because we have an electronic microscope image of what viruses look like with kind of the crystal on top and the weird mechanical spider legs on the bottom. And we know what bacteria looks like and stuff. And they're not these. These are just very animized versions of them, where they're just like one of them is like a weird brown, angry jelly bean, but it's got like branches for limbs. It's just like, what the fuck is.
Speaker A:This one is like a snake, but its tail has a shark mouth on it.
Speaker C:Yeah. And it's crazy as shit.
Speaker B:Yeah. Very spooky. So Phil gets to work doing his job. slashing. I'm surprised that the only weapons that white blood cells have in this show are knives.
Speaker C:Yeah. It's like an army combat knife, but it's all they need.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's very effective. So he kind of leads the red blood cells that he saved down the hallway and he's like, run away. Save yourselves. I'll be fine. And Ruth is like, are you sure? And he's like, yeah, it'll be chill. This is going to be great.
Speaker C:This is my job.
Speaker A:Literally my job.
Speaker C:I do this every day.
Speaker B:Yeah. So they all run away and then they get trapped in a hallway blood vessel because it's blocked off, I think, due to the vassoconsriction.
Speaker C:I think that's why the blood can flow one way without backing up into the heart or veins and fucking it up.
Speaker B:Yeah. So they're all stuck in there. And then some germs come in. Oh, no.
Speaker A:Oh, boy.
Speaker B:But then other white blood cells come in and smack them around and kill them. Thank goodness. And the white blood cells, when they get to kill, they go nuts.
Speaker C:Yeah. They go hard.
Speaker B:They're like, I'm going to fucking kill you.
Speaker A:I live for this moment.
Speaker B:And then they do that. And then they're like, hey, so which way is the cut? And all the red blood cells are like, that way. And they're like, thanks, guys.
Speaker C:One of the red blood cells like, hey, those white guys, those white blood cell guys are kind of freaks, aren't they? Even they comment.
Speaker B:I was going to say that. They're like, whoa. Jesus, these guys are wild. Yeah. And then Phil is shown all alone with four germs, which quickly turns into one germ because he kills two of them. And then one of them one of the ones that looks like a tree thingy traps him. And then he's to the other one, he's like, hey, get out here. Go to the other germs. Go attack more stuff. So he's alone with this weird tree one, and he just rips off one of the things that's holding him still and just stabs the germ with his own appendages, which is lit, metal, raw as fuck.
Speaker C:I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me. But he's very deadpanic.
Speaker B:Yeah. And then the white blood cells are shown kind of talking about how the germs are acting weird and they're just expecting a huge germ attack. It's going to happen. And then I was like, wow, their uniforms get dirty really easily. Maybe they should consider wearing something other than white. But then how would they know that they're white blood cells?
Speaker C:That they're doing their job.
Speaker B:Yeah. So they're fighting all the germs, and then they're talking to the main yellow lady germ thingy. And she's planned this, like, never ending stream of germs just coming into this scrape. They waited for this moment.
Speaker C:She's done her research.
Speaker B:She's done her research. She's telling the white blood cells and Phil that she knows how the immune system works. I know what's happening. I know you're here. I know the what do they call the phages?
Speaker C:The bacteria, whatever.
Speaker B:No, the other helper stuff. The other helper cells, pretty much. She knows all about them.
Speaker C:The killer t cells. The helper T cells.
Speaker B:Yeah, all of them. And then Phil is like, but you've discounted the most powerful helper cell of all. And then the platelets come.
Speaker A:You forgot about my backup kindergarten.
Speaker B:So the platelets come. They're here to repair the scrape. But before they do so their little leader is like reading a note card of rules. And she's like, okay, you have all your stuff. Don't fight each other. That's important. Let's go.
Speaker C:Everyone's got their buddy. Your shoes are tied. Careful where you walk. Just like, very simple.
Speaker A:Like, don't fall in anyone.
Speaker B:Yeah, be careful. So they get on in there, and they stick the fibrin across the big old hole, and yay. They save the day by using their fibrin and their coagulation factors, they're going to form a blood clot. yay. Babies.
Speaker A:Babies saving the day.
Speaker B:Yeah. And now no more germs can get in. So they defeat the leader yellow germ. Her reign of terror has ended.
Speaker C:I like how she's like, super cocky. I did my research. I'm not that other dumb idiot that came here before and got himself killed. And we see two other germs that were the same as the one before. And they're like, hey, wasn't that your little brother?
Speaker A:And he's like, oh, yeah. He's like, I want to talk about it.
Speaker C:Yeah, he's an idiot.
Speaker B:Yeah. So Phil is after defeating her, he's kind of just laying in the fiber, and Ruth comes down to make. Sure that he's okay. And he's like, Why are you here? And she's like, I just wanted to come down here and thank you because you did a really good job, and we can't really do anything. The red blood cells, we just run away. And he's like, yeah, but I mean, you're helpful right now. And then she realizes she stuck to the fibrin and that both of them are now part of the blood clot, and they have to be there for three days.
Speaker A:And we see them get rolled in with hundreds of other red blood cells, and all the platelets are bringing them like tea and water because they have to wait there.
Speaker B:Yeah. And that's the end of episode two. Yeah, baby, save the day that we.
Speaker C:See the platelet leader kind of leading the charge while all the red blood cells are roped up in the firebrand. And it's like, oh, God, it's so hot. And get all these bodies together and huddle them, stick them together, because you're stuck here. It's like a little child forcing people in this position for three days. This is weird.
Speaker A:I hope you all have your torture training.
Speaker C:Yeah, pretty much, but they could be a scab. So, yeah, that's episode two. And then we got episode three, which I don't know about this show. I'm glad I got this episode, though. It's a good one.
Speaker A:Yeah, I was liking this because I was afraid things were going to be too sammy, and just every episode would have a similar invasion plot line. But, yeah, I was like, in this.
Speaker C:It kind of similar, but it's done in a different way. But yeah, it's totally different. And it starts off in the dark alleyway, and we see a single killer T cell walking around, but he's smaller than all the other ones. It seems really nervous. And then we see his hat says naive, which is, I'm assuming the one.
Speaker A:You wanted is something I would buy.
Speaker C:So he's kind of walking around by himself looking for something. He's very panicky. He's freaking out at any little noise and getting skittish, and he comes across a zombie looking cell with a weird fuzzy hat. And we find out it's a virus. And then a bunch of them start popping up and pop up, and they spread like crazy like a virus does. And then as he's cowering, he's about to get attacked by one. And then Phil comes out of nowhere, or actually out of the alleyway he squeezed through because he can do the migration thing through the cell walls. And he comes through and cuts them open. He's like, all right, it's just you and me here, naive T cell. So we got to work hard and look in the naive T cells just cowering, like in a fetal position, like crying. It's like, ah, great, this one. And he's crying. And then thanks, Phil, for saving him the whole time. And I noticed Phil actually does like a little prayer over the virus cells he killed because they were common cells that were mutated into the virus zombie versus the regular bacteria or germs who were just, I guess, inherently evil.
Speaker B:I was wondering what these guys were in the episodes before. These guys that just wear white T shirts.
Speaker C:Yeah, he just calls them common cells, so I don't really know what they do.
Speaker A:Yeah, because the pop up, it just said sell. And for some reason I thought my screen was like cropped and it was like, oh, it just says cell. Am I not seeing what type of cell? No, just sell, just sell.
Speaker C:I mean, they exist to be consumed by the virus and then kill off. So I don't think they wanted to get you attached. It's platelets. Oh, no, they have a virus now. We have to kill children. So I think they just want to throw away disposable cells. But White says the other cells have been infected and it's an influenza virus and it's taken them over and the naive cell is too scared to fight them. And then we see more of the virus cells coming in kind of surrounding them. And then we see the maid. We saw her earlier in episode one, I believe, where when Ruth went to the spleen and it's like, you're in the wrong place. And she's like dressed up in an old Victorian maid outfit and we see a shot of her in the opening with this big bloody hatchet and I'm just like, I don't know who she is, but I'm excited. Here she is, so pumped, getting lizzie.
Speaker A:Borden in the sandeman.
Speaker C:Getting strong bloodborne vibes, and we find out she's a microphage and that's very powerful cells that are kind of like, I guess slow moving. We later find out there are cells that will attack and defend the body from invasions and then also relay that information back to the body, like as a signaller. But she's just slowly walking down this dark alley with this giant bloody hatchet and just get surrounded by the viruses and like just does a whirlwind attack and just cuts through all of them instantly. And she's just like coded and blood. She's like, oh, hi guys. And she's like, fucking metal shit, I love it. And so she relays the information back saying like, oh, hey, we got to influenza type B virus down here. And she lets we later find out it's the dentrict cell dendrites dendrites. He's kind of in like a kind of hotel uniform looking like bellhop sort of style green uniform. And he's on the other end of the phone, he's like, okay, got it. And he leans over and tells the helper T cell from the earlier episode who runs off and starts mobilizing everyone and gives them the command center. And so after she tells him he's able to send the killer T cells down there and more microphage and all the other natural body defenses. And this is when we see naive kind of trying to the naive T cell trying to sneak away from all the fighting because he doesn't want to get roped up into it because he's naive. He's scared. He's scared.
Speaker A:He also doesn't want to get bullied by the big boys.
Speaker C:Yeah, we find out he's a little intimidated by all the other killer T cells who are just the macho Man Body Improvement Club from, like, Mob psycho. They're just like the beef, but less.
Speaker A:Nice much, I was going to say.
Speaker C:And when while he's trying to sneak away, he actually runs into them and they catch him, and it's like, why are you no one trying to run away. Have you actually killed anything? You got to pull your weight and start laying into them, which is exactly what he tried to avoid. But I also like, at this point when they show up, we also see other white blood cells just, like, sliding in through the alleyway, but, like, higher up. And they're just like, oh, hey, they're over there. There's more viruses over there. And they're like, oh, cool. Can you help me out of here? He's like, I'm kind of stuck here. Do you pull I also loved phil's.
Speaker A:Boot gets pulled off because it's so tight.
Speaker C:Yeah, through it.
Speaker A:So he's just fighting with one sock out.
Speaker C:And then we get a cut to Red and her senpai walk around making deliveries of nice nutrients. And you got your lettuce, you got like an orange, you got your baguette, which is standard anime groceries. You always got to have the baguette in there. And we see, of course, the area is being evacuated because the virus is getting close and everyone's kind of panicking. It's like, we got to get out of here. And it cuts back to naive T cell running away and crying. And then he trips over and he's just bawling his eyes out because he's useless. And that's when the dendrite cell comes up to him. It's kind of like, hey, man, what's going on? Why are you crying and all that. He's like, I'm useless. And he's like, well, yeah, that's true, but no one starts out strong. Everyone is weak when they begin, and you got to get better as you do it. He's like, I can even show you. And he pulls out this photo album, and then we just get cut back quick to the T cells fighting with the white blood cells against the viruses. And all the T cells, like, shiver, and they're just like, oh, something bad is happening. Like, what? It's like. And when we come back to the naive T cell, he's looking at a photo album of all of the killer T cells back when they were naive T cells like him, and they were all getting beat up and yelled at and chewed out like in basic training.
Speaker A:I sent someone showing embarrassing photos of me at the Christmas party.
Speaker C:I think the killer T cells have something actually really similar to that. Someone's bringing up my embarrassing past.
Speaker A:And, yeah, my idiocy. It's no longer a secret.
Speaker C:My naivete. So this is where the naive T cells kind of like, oh, yeah, they were all like me, and if they were like me, then I can be like them eventually. And he gets motivated and encouraged and activated. And activating NIT cells is actually one of his other skills besides relaying information. So he was actually helping him the whole time.
Speaker A:It was a trick, you say?
Speaker C:Got you. Trick you into believing in your inner self nerd fucking gadget.
Speaker A:Now you're a buff. Got you character.
Speaker C:It's just a prank, bro. Yeah. So when we get back to the battle, the virus is spreading more and more, and there's a bunch of, like, apartment buildings on the sides, and it's a big open area. But all the common cells that are in those apartment buildings, like, on the balconies, looking out, watching the big battle, they're getting affected by the virus, too. So the numbers are just growing and growing and growing. And the body's natural defenses is kind of getting overwhelmed by this. And we also see the body's temperatures heating up elsewhere in the body to try and combat it. And people are saying, like, oh, gosh, so goddamn hot, because it's trying to burn out the virus. And this is around where Red is. She's starting to see the different natural defenses kicking in around her, too. Sorry. Look at my notes. And it's around this time when everyone gets cornered and the influenza virus starts overwhelming them. And then we just see a fist come out of a wall and just punch one of the zombies out. It's just like oh, shit. And we hear our voices like, sorry I'm late, everyone. I just had to reevaluate myself and kind of get a little motivated. It's just like, oh, who is this beefcake voice coming through the wall? And as he just walks through it, it's the naive T cell. He's been activated. And yeah, he's just a fucking jojo's character.
Speaker B:He's got it's me dio.
Speaker A:Basically, it's been me this entire time.
Speaker C:The thickest eyebrows, a jaw that can fucking cut diamonds, and just like this.
Speaker A:Crazy but I thought diamonds were unbreakable. That's one of three jojo jokes I can make. It's always Joe jokes.
Speaker C:Well, now he's no longer a naive T cell. He's in an effector T cell, and he's just buffet shit and just starts laying into all the viruses. And there's also, like, 30 of them now, so I guess he, like, multiplied. Or he just got all the other effector tcells and brought them up with him. It's not clear.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah. In being activated, he also got multiplied. Okay, I forget the medical term they used, but me too.
Speaker C:Cloning. That's good enough. And he just starts laying into him, and he actually like if it wasn't clear enough from the style, he was a Jojo's reference. He actually does the aura, which is what Star Platinum does when he hits everyone. So it's just a very big gigo homage. And it's great despite us not watching Jojo's that much. And we also see B cell pops up, and he's a little kid with a backwards cap, and he's here to breathe the antibodies and shut down this virus.
Speaker B:Dog?
Speaker C:I don't know. He didn't say dog, but he's just running like cargo pants and stuff. He just looks like a very young skater kid.
Speaker B:What is up, fellow T?
Speaker A:Yeah, we also see one of the killer T cells is like a memory T cell and just as like a little playbook. And it's like, oh, yeah, we fought these dudes before. We know how to go about this. Yeah, let me bring this up. Halfway through the fight, we know all their weaknesses.
Speaker C:Oh, what are they? We kill them. Thanks. Yeah.
Speaker A:The body tried murder.
Speaker C:What about more murder?
Speaker B:That'Ll do it.
Speaker A:That'Ll chestnut.
Speaker C:That's how your body develops immunities and resistances to other diseases. It's the memory T cells remembers them and knows how to combat and stuff. So it is very effective, even if he doesn't contribute to the fight itself. But it's like, hey, we're making note of this medical thing too, so they do a good job of it. And when the B cell shows up, he's got all antibodies that are effective. Everyone's kind of not paying attention because we get the effective T cells just laying into them and are just all big and shiny and just muscley and much more fun to look at than this little nerd. And in order to help fight the virus, the body starts shutting down other parts so it can give more attention to the virus. And the stomach slows down so it's not digesting food as quickly, and there's not much of an appetite anymore. And then, yeah, the body heats up even more. They make sure that are well hydrated so they have a bunch of water on hand. And once the affected T cells shows up, they start wiping out all the other viruses. And it looks like they won it looks like they're doing good. B cells kind of bitter because they kind of stole the limelight from him because he shooting a virus and bacteria like big fighter, I guess, with the antibodies. And it's around this time we see there's one more virus that I guess they missed. Just kind of looks like a little virus so far and just kind of wanders out of the rubble. It's just kind of stumbling towards everyone like a zombie. infector is like, you think you can take us on? I guess we just missed this one small fry. Let me take care of this, guys. And goes up to the virus to wipe them out. And the virus just bitch slaps them and sends them flying. nah, he just Yeds them across the area and finally like, oh, that's very strange. And the B cells like, don't worry, now it's my time to shine with my antibodies. Ha ha. And he sprays them and it doesn't do anything. They're just like, oh fuck. And they realize this is an influenza virus, but it's a type A influenza virus, not the type B ones they were fighting beforehand. So the antibodies are useless. And after the effector, T cell gets knocked away. He kind of shrinks back down to his naive form because he gets demotivated after that. And dang it, no more beefcake. And we find out this type A influenza virus is actually the ones are a different strain and are the one excuse me, I sound like I'm getting the influenza virus. And we find out this is the type of influenza virus that can go on a global scale and can mutate very quickly and combat like defense defenses like this. So they keep changing so you can never know how to prepare against them. And it's like, it's a much bigger deal. And you see his arm mutated into this giant, like one arm, and he throws more viruses out that infect other common cells around them. So like fuck. And the microphage calls it in and it's like, hey, yeah, it's a type A one, we're going to need more help. And that's about it. Oh, we also see the cell or what? Daedrick Daedrick prince Dendrite dendrite cell getting the call from the microphage. And he's just like back at his little tree like cafe booth area. And we just see little platelets like playing around him. He's like, oh yeah, there's like a new buyers. It's going to suck. And he just starts laughing like he's really jolly because he's nowhere near the danger, I guess. And he doesn't actually have to do anything, just call in other people. So he just seems like pretty upbeat about it.
Speaker A:He's going to fight me, so fuck everyone else, pretty much.
Speaker C:Ha ha. It sucks to be you guys. And yeah, that's episode three. Not a lot of Phil and Ruth in this one.
Speaker A:Yeah, that is why I was starting to like it a little bit more in this third episode because I thought it would be more formulaic of, oh, these two characters have to fight a new virus every week. But we took a little break. These characters were still in it, but the spotlight was put on our little naive T virus.
Speaker C:Yeah, or cell not a virus. He fights the virus. Yeah. And even in the opening we see like I said, you see the microphage in the opening with her like bloody hatch. And so he kind of got a tease of what it was in the beginning. And there's some sort of cell with a big book. So I'm guessing that's like brain cells learning a bunch of information, and there's another cell that was running around, like, pulling a book into her monitors, talking to a phone, like, really panicky and stuff. And I guess she was building something, so she might be another cell. That kind of an episode focuses on and stuff. So there were more characters? We have the titular two main characters, but there were other characters that seem to be the focus for some episodes.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's like Anime schoolhouse Rock. Each thing talks about a new you learn about a new thing in the body, a new cell and what they do.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker A:I was very surprised how actually informative this was. Yeah.
Speaker B:I feel like italia is kind of the same way, where it teaches you history in, like, a roundabout way. This is a little more direct, but I'm into it. I like that idea.
Speaker A:I was thinking about italia with the transformation because that's one of the few animes I've seen. It's been years, but I actually know that. But seeing how countries would split and merge and become different things, and specifically, like, the prussia stuff, just that Killer T transformation, I was like, oh, this is familiar. I'm learning something.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:And it's a lot easier to take in all the information when, hey, we've all got a bit of biology from school and stuff. So you already are familiar with some of the stuff, but it's actually real world applicable information versus some animes I've watched where it's like, they pause the episode and the narrator talks for a bit and it's just this huge info dump. And all it is, is just more lore and backstory for this fictional world. And it's like, it's cool that you thought so much of this world, but 90% of this paragraph you're reading right now is made up words that I don't have context for, and you're just throwing a lot at me all the time and kind of get overwhelmed with the information and get shut down to it. But this is all applicable, so it's like, oh, I know what a white blood cell is. I've heard of the Killer T cells before. Yeah, it also run me a lot of Miss Kobianchi's dragon Maid. It's just, like, very pleasant and kind of no real overarching story to it. Kind of like episodic set pieces.
Speaker A:Yeah. I really enjoyed how, for this world, the stakes were so high because it will kill everyone and ruin things. But just pulling out and being like, oh, someone will get the flu.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:Well, even the flu has strep throat.
Speaker C:Even the flu is bad. But just even the scrape episode of the episode two, which is like, oh, my God, the city's destroyed. Bacteria swarming. It's like, yo, this isn't even a paper cut. This is like a scratch. This is nothing.
Speaker B:Yeah, it's like, oh, my cat scratched.
Speaker C:Yeah, my bones.
Speaker A:Oh, no.
Speaker B:But so are we there yet?
Speaker A:I would continue watching this oh, I think this is interesting enough, especially with the informative angle and knowing that they're going to get two different cells and different stuff. I would say that this is a fun, educational little romp.
Speaker B:I agree.
Speaker C:Romp up the jams. And it's also short. It's like 13 episodes and it's pretty new. So there's only one season.
Speaker B:Yeah. This is another show that I would watch if I'm just like I just want to do nothing and be a little brainless because I realized that I would be learning a little bit. But it's kind of a refresher. I was in an anatomy class.
Speaker A:This, ironically, would be a good show to watch when you're sick. Oh, yeah. Just something to put on. Just hack up a lung every time you sneeze. You can imagine it's a little rocket just shooting bacteria at your nose.
Speaker B:I was thinking that sometimes I'll watch, like, an episode of anime, like before I go to bed. But I feel like I'd rather watch this during the day. I don't want to watch it in the dark.
Speaker C:I don't know why, but I feel.
Speaker B:Like it's just like a happy show to pump you up as opposed to get ready to go to bed.
Speaker C:Yeah. It's not like a wind down. It's kind of just like a nice morning cup of tea.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:I feel glad I woke up and watched it.
Speaker C:I feel like if I watch this while sick, I would get resentful and my body was just like, goddamn, fell. I can't do your job in early. They can do it.
Speaker A:Why can't you, motherfucker?
Speaker B:Are you seeing how hard they work?
Speaker A:I work it hard enough.
Speaker B:My goodness.
Speaker C:I also hate my body. It's very clear from my diet and alcohol choices.
Speaker A:Damn well.
Speaker C:But I think it would be good. I think it's weird because it's weird to call it like a brain dead sort of show where you don't have to pay attention because it is just kind of so episodic and just like peaceful. But it's also so informative. But there doesn't seem to be like a character arc or development because they're selves. They were made to do one thing. And despite dugan's suspicions, I don't think there will be a romance anywhere in this show.
Speaker A:Yeah, I don't think so. I just want all of the gay stuff. This is nothing new.
Speaker C:We all know this.
Speaker A:I know intellectually it's not going to happen. But still hope one can dream. A by can dream.
Speaker C:This is actually the first yes we've had in like five episodes to a show.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:People didn't want to actively make me angry. And then I liked a thing. Weird how that works. This is your pick.
Speaker C:Hey, you picked zoet. And we still said no to that. But still, that wasn't on me.
Speaker A:The last two. You wanted me to be angry.
Speaker C:Revolutionary girl. tuna. tuna wasn't bad.
Speaker B:Revolutionary girl. tuna fish.
Speaker C:Tuna fish. tuna can. Oh, yes.
Speaker A:Sorry, I forgot there was one at least somewhat pleasant one in between the awfulness.
Speaker B:You got a little gay.
Speaker C:You got a good amount of gay.
Speaker A:A little gay oasis in the desert of anime.
Speaker C:Good stuff.
Speaker A:All right, well, what's going on next week?
Speaker C:Next week we got a good one. And I don't mean like, my good one with, like, K Joe. I mean like a universally acclaimed good anime series. We're watching samurai shampoo, which is from the same creator as cowboy bebop, which is one of the most prolific animes of all time. So it's a very similar tone but about samurai's. And we're going to change it up a bit. We're going to jump around. We're not going to do the first three episodes like we've done the last few. We can do episodes one, six and nine. And if you know what episode nine is, you know why I'm picking it for this week.
Speaker B:Wink. Does someone die? Because that's what you said about German laga and then communa died.
Speaker A:No.
Speaker C:What? No.
Speaker A:Brendan Grace wants to show us all the sad episodes.
Speaker C:Oh, just you, lace. I pick the most upsetting episodes I can find are some shows.
Speaker B:Oh, I know it.
Speaker C:I want someone to cry on this podcast. That's my ultimate goal.
Speaker A:I do. I already almost cry afterwards and it's because I'm so sad I have to do this podcast.
Speaker C:So, yeah, that's next week.
Speaker A:All right, well, thank you all for joining us this week. If there's a show you would like us to watch, reach out to us on social media at Arweather, on Twitter and Instagram. Or you can reach out to our email arwibariat@gmail.com, and you can find me on Twitter and Instagram at Mr. Patrick dugan.
Speaker B:You can find me on Instagram at queen. Period. weaboo and on Twitter at Queen underscore Wihu.
Speaker C:You can find me on Twitter at ABS. Brendan stands for Almost Better Than Silence, which is my video game podcast.
Speaker A:And I need to figure out how we're doing this, but I'm going to throw my hat over the fence. There is a revolutionary Girl Lieutenant video game that we found after the episode was recorded, and I want to find some way for us to play that, because the internet told me is very cursed.
Speaker C:I want to play, not because it's good.
Speaker B:So please curse us and help us figure out how to play.
Speaker A:Yeah. If you have information, please, I need this in my life. Thank you to camille ruley for our artwork, and thank you to Louis zong for the use of our theme song Stories off the album Beats. You can find all of louie's music at Louisong bandcamp.com. Thank you and we hope you will join us next time as we learn to live with anime.
Speaker B:Take care of your body. Drink a lot of water.
Speaker A:Don't get sick. Stay hydrated.
Speaker B:Do it for the platelets.
